Invasion of the body snatchers
Released: 1956 Running Time: 80 mins. Director: Don Siegel Stars: Kevin McCarthy, Dana Wynter, Larry Gates
Invasion of the Body Snatchers is a science fiction horror movie that explores the theme of alien invasion and the replacement of humans with identical, emotionless duplicates. Based on the novel "The Body Snatchers" by Jack Finney, it has been interpreted as a commentary on the dangers of conformity and the fear of the unknown during the Cold War era, as well as a warning against the dangers of losing oneself.
Set in a small town in California, Dr. Miles Bennell (McCarthy), a local doctor, begins to notice strange behavior in his patients. People seem to be losing their emotions and becoming cold and distant. Bennell's friend, Becky (Wynter), tells him that her cousin is convinced that her uncle is not really her uncle, but an imposter who looks exactly like him. As more and more people report similar experiences, Bennell and Becky begin to investigate.
They discover that alien plant spores have arrived on Earth and are taking over human bodies while they sleep. The duplicate bodies are identical to the originals, but lack any emotion or individuality. As the invasion spreads, Bennell and Becky realize that they are among the few remaining humans who have not been replaced. They struggle to avoid being caught by the invaders and find a way to alert the rest of the world to the danger.
The film ends with Bennell frantically warning passing motorists about the invasion, but his warnings are ignored, and the spores continue to spread. Remade multiple times over the decades, as well as the theme in many more movies, this version remains my favorite.
